Behind The Mic: Juma Sultan

Legendary musician Juma Sultan, who played with Jimi Hendrix

Juma Sultan is a legendary jazz musician born in 1942, best known for performing alongside Jimi Hendrix and appearing at the Woodstock Festival of 1969. But this film is not about fame, it is about what music means at the deepest level: as a language, a calling, and a medicine.

Juma calls himself a “sound minister,” and after 80+ years of living, he has earned the title. In this intimate short documentary portrait, he reflects on a life shaped by anger, institutions, and ultimately transformation through sound. From the humble spirit of Jimi Hendrix to the unity he finds in his current band, Juma shares his belief that every person carries a heart song inside them, and that music has the power to heal, unite communities, and say what words alone cannot.

“We could be free. We could be healed. That’s what music does.”

Whether you’re a fan of Jimi Hendrix, Woodstock, jazz history, or short music documentaries, this film offers a rare and moving glimpse into the life of one of music’s most soulful voices.
